I wanted to let families know about the new initiative at VPM (Virginia’s home for Public Media) to support summer learning – especially for students who don’t have reliable access to a computer or internet. From my work for Richmond with the National Campaign for Grade Level Reading, I know just how vital opportunities for summer learning can be. With the compounding effect of Covid-19 impacting the end of the school year and the uncertainty about how school will look this fall, it is even more vital to seek out and use all the available resources. This new televised resource is designed for the older kiddos but VPM has other resources geared to the younger age groups too. Visit VPM Early Childhood Education.

The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and the 150+ communities working with the Campaign are dedicated to narrowing the gap between children from low-income families and their more affluent peers. This video shows why that gap occurs and how we can close it. Please embed on your website and share on your social media platforms.

To help students avoid the summer slide, VPM has partnered with educators and non-profit organizations to create televised content that will keep students in grades 4-10 engaged in learning and inspired to discover more.

Each show was created and filmed by educators from their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, featuring content areas in science, art, history, and English that correlate with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). In certain shows, educators also introduce professionally produced segments that reinforce the concepts being taught in an episode. The goal of VPM Classroom content is to educate, entertain and inspire.

VPM Classroom airs each weekday starting at 1:00 p.m. on VPM Plus from July 6 – August 14, 2020. New episodes are uploaded weekly. Go to vpm.org/classroom to learn more and to stream episodes.
